Snedecor Reunion Picnic
French Regional Park on Medicine Lake, MN
Saturday, August 6th
Come join the fun while you are in Minneapolis! ISU Statistics alumni, staff, friends and their families are invited to some outdoor fun and a picnic on Saturday, August 6th (the day before JSM starts). The Department will host a catered picnic at the beautiful French Regional Park on Medicine Lake (just 20 minutes from downtown Minneapolis)
|
| Enjoy some time in the park or just come for the picnic. Either way, there will be food, fun and -- most importantly -- many of your long-time friends, associates and their families from ISU.
Picnic will be held at the Moraine Shelter in French Park from 2:00pm - 9:00pm. The shelter has 24 picnic tables, electricity, etc. The caterer will be "firing up the bar-bie" preparing to serve dinner from 5:00pm - 6:00pm, so please get your reservations in now! The Department is hosting this event--there is no charge for you. Please go to the link below to RSVP for the picnic and a ride from your hotel if you need. Caterers are wanting a head count soon (how many adults, how many children 5-12, and how many children under 4) and it takes just a minute to complete the form!

J.N.K. Rao (Ph.D.,'61) received the 2005 Waakesberg Award for outstanding contributions in the theory and practice of survey methodology. He is a distinguished research professor and professor emeritus at Carleton University, Ottawa, Canada. He received the 1960 George W. Snedecor Award for outstanding Ph.D. student from ISU Department of Statistics.
Dr. Rao not only received his Ph.D. from ISU, but he received his name "Jon" while a student here... "My Ph.D. supervisor was Professor H.O. Hartley, a world-renowned statistician. One day he asked me to write my full name on the black board. It starts as 'Jonnagadda" which is actually my family name and the last name I use "Rao" is simply a title in South India from where I come from. He looked at the first word and then cut it to the first three letters and ever since I was known as 'Jon' to everyone! My full name is Jonnagadda NaliniKanth Rao and "NaliniKanth" is my given name."

Dr. Holly C. Fryer (Ph.D., 1940) died Nov. 7, 2004 at Mercy Regional Health Center in Manhattan, Kansas. Dr. Fryer received the first Ph.D. with a major in Statistics from ISU under the direction of George W. Snedecor and C. P. Winsor.
"For those of you who never met him, Dr. Fryer was quite a remarkable man. He was the first Ph.D. statistician hired by KSU (1940), the founder of the Statistical Laboratory, the driving force and first department head for the Department of Statistics, and a long-time supporter of the department. His picture and a little bit more biographical information hang in the lobby of Dickens Hall as a small tribute to all he has done. I hope you'll keep his family in your thoughts and prayers." John Boyer, Professor and Head of the Department of Statistics, KSU

Hyung Woo Kim (MS, 1999) & Woo Jin Byun with 1 year old son Andrew Jungyoung Kim. (Kim recently wrote a note to one of our faculty and this is posted with their permission): "I have moved from...to Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle in January 2004 to work as a statistical research associate. Once I become a faculty here and have an opening for a new graduate, my hope is that I can hire someone from Iowa State University...once again I appreciate your guidance on my study and your support. I am indebted to you for the situation I hold now."
|
|
Hyung Woo also wrote a note about his experience with the Main Office: |
 |
"Jeanette (LaGrange), how do I forget your warm welcome at the main office and the fun we had while we were painting the offices during the summer. I guess if one survives at ISU, he/she would have a successful career at any place." |
| Jeanette LaGrange "our very special welcoming smile" in the main office. |

| Of course it is always nice to get positive feed-back from students and alumni. The Department strives very hard to make a difference for all the students who attend here. And once in awhile, when we least expect it, we are reminded that we all can "make a difference" to someone. And, as it turns out...Hyung Woo "made a difference" to the people that he came in contact with here at ISU also! |
