For Current Graduate Students
The Department and University provide many resources that are designed to help the student succeed. Some of these are academic resources and others are for general well being.
The Oscar Kempthorne Statistics Reading Room is located in 3455 Wilson Hall. This Reading Room is open during regular office hours. It contains all of the major statistical journals and many textbooks to help you with classwork or research. These materials can be checked out through the librarian in 3455 Wilson Hall.
The Department of Statistics provides computing facilities in two open labs (Carver 205 and Pearson 0113). 40 PCs are housed in Carver 205. This lab is open to the public when it is not used for course teaching (Carver 205 Schedule). Pearson 0113 has 14 PCs and is the department's home away from home during the Snedecor Hall Renovation ( Pearson 0113).
The University Library is a great resource for additional research materials. You should take a Library tour during orientation so that you can use this resource efficiently.
The University provides health services through its Student Center. All full time students pay a student health fee which gives them access to this Center. Graduate assistants are eligible to participate in the ISU Student and Scholar Health Insurance Plan. The Graduate College has a brochure that describes this plan.
If a graduate student has a personal conflict with another student, a staff member or a faculty member, he/she may discuss this issue with an advisor, DOGE or Department Chair. If the problem is not resolved at the departmental level, the student may appeal in writing to the Dean of the Graduate College. See the Graduate College Handbook for details.
Graduate students often find graduate study and assistantship duties stressful. When this happens, it is often helpful to discuss the situation with your colleagues, your instructors, or your advisor. If this does not solve the problem, there is professional help available through the Student Counseling Service. Counseling services are offered at no cost to ISU students and the counseling is strictly confidential.
The University has strict policies on issues such as conflict of interest, academic misconduct, and sexual harassment. Please see the Graduate College Handbook for information on how these policies apply to graduate students.
The Department helps students find employment when they are close to graduation. Job Opportunities are posted on the web. Each October the Department prepares a list of "students planning to graduate within the next 12 months." This list is sent to many industrial and government organizations. Be sure to get your name on this list when you are within a year of graduation. See the DOGE if you have questions or concerns about placement.
