AFS

Andrew File System (AFS), is the campus wide distributed file system that provides all staff, faculty, and students at Iowa State with 1 GB of file space. Most people use this space for Webmail and their personal web site but some use it for storing course work, backups, etc.

To install the software on the Microsoft Windows platform one should do the following (Note that mounting your AFS home directory works much easier if your local login/password matches your ISU net-id/password):

  1. Install Scout by following these directions.
  2. Once the machine has rebooted then start the Scout software, you will be asked to enter your ISU-netid and password which will give you a Kerberos ticket.
  3. Enter your netid into the Username field, then select update, then select Advanced packages, then lastly select Done.
  4. Now select Open AFS (and a tool) and follow the instructions, selecting the defaults. Note that if you already have an earlier version of this product you will need to uninstall it first, reboot and then restart Scout.
  5. After the installation of AFS you will be asked to install MountAFSHome, go ahead and do that, once again selecting the defaults.
  6. Now restart your machine and if all went well you should have your AFS home directory mounted whenever you login when you machine is connected to the internet.
  7. If the above procedure did not work, but AFS seemed to install okay then try out these directions.
  8. If all else fails then call the Solution Center and 4-4000.

If you have a Mac running OSX then try these instructions. If you are a Linux user (Red Hat) then you can find instructions here.
