Three Methods for Creating Course Web Pages:

Easy Course Web Page Construction with Copy/Paste to Folders

Ted Peterson has created a very easy-to-use course web page system for instructors, using a folder-based approach. Each course section has a home page automatically set up. All the instructor needs to do is to make a subfolder on the page and then copy appropriate course material into that subfolder. One can view these pages by opening the Statistics Homepage, choosing Courses and then clicking on WWW for the desired course, or enter the URL: http://www.stat.iastate.edu/courses/CoursesBySemester.php

For on-campus users to make folders and transfer course material, open up the yellow Windows Explorer, or My Computer, and enter the following at the top of the folder by backspacing and typing: \\streaming.stat.iastate.edu. This will bring up a list of current semester courses. Find your course/section and double-click on the name. Then double-click on WWW. From there, you can create folders and copy/paste material from your local computer to the web site. Then check your work by viewing the course from the department course page, as stated above. The students just need to click on the appropriate folder to access your class material.

For off-campus users to make folders and transfer course material, first connect to ISU using VPN which is downloadable from ISU Scout in the advanced section. Then follow the instructions above to copy/paste material to your course web site.

Alternatively, if you decide to use HTML to create your course page, you should email Ted (cpterson@iastate.edu) or Kathy Shelley (kathy@iastate.edu) the web page URL for your course. We would like to encourage students to go to the department course page and click on their course WWW because of class meeting information, ease of use and also the handy Email Instructor tab.

Course Web Page Stored In Your Personal AFS Web Space

Instructions for creating web pages in your AFS space can be found here. You may also keep your course pages in your AFS space. If you do this, email your course web page URL to one of the department computer support personnel so they can link your course to the main department web pages.

Course Web Page Creation using Web CT Gold:

Web CT Gold is the new and preferred version of Web CT. It has the unique feature of being tied in to the NetIDs for students enrolled in your class. Some of the features available in Web CT that are not available in normal web pages are:

  • Online Assignments, Graded Homework, and Exams
  • A secure gradebook that displays only the logged in student's grades for his/her homework and exams
  • A chat room and white board
  • A class calendar notifying due dates for assignments, exams, etc.
