Personal Web Page Creation Using HTML

(Source or HTML Editors)

ISU IT (Information Tecnology) now is giving 1GB of disk space to each person having a valid ISU Net ID. Because of stability problems with the ftp server on statwebserver, we are discontinuing the use of the statwebserver web site and asking instructors to use their own AIT provided disk space for their (teaching) course web pages. Following are instructions to facilitate this:

How to Register for personal web space : If you do not currently have your own personal web space, you will need to register for this space before making personal or course web pages. Here are instructions:

  • Start a Web browser and connect to asw.iastate.edu. Log in with your Iowa State Network-ID and password.
  • Click Manage User yourNetID.
  • Click View/Edit your personal Webpage settings.
  • Click Register Web Page.
  • Fill in a description for your Website under Description and click Register, then Logout.
  • This will create a WWW folder which houses your personal homepage. The URL for your personal homepage would be: http://NetID.public.iastate.edu/homepage.html. i.e. if your NetID is johndoe, then your homepage URL would be: http://johndoe.public.iastate.edu/homepage.html.

More general information about your personal web page can be found at: http://www.public.iastate.edu/

Compose Your Web Pages on Your Local Computer (PC, Mac, or Linux Box):Use your favorite web page editor software to make your course web pages. Some choices could be Netscape or Mozilla (Windows or Linux) or FrontPage (Windows). In general, Mozilla produces much cleaner html source code and is easier to edit.

Save these pages locally, preferably to both a hard drive and either a CD, USB flash drive or floppy.

How to Transfer Your Files to Your Personal Website Using Either (1) the FTP Client, Filezilla, or (2) Copy and Paste from Windows Explorer with Open-AFS :

  1. Transfer Your Files to Your Personal Website with FileZilla :
Start FileZilla. (Windows Filezilla which is available on all lab PCs in Snedecor and downloadable via Scout. ) Select File->Site Manager and choose one of the isua machines (isua1,isua2,...). Enter your Iowa State Net-ID under "User" and your password under "Password". Click OK.Double-click on the WWW folder in the right column file listing.Under Local Site, double-click on the folder or up-arrow icons to open the folder containing the file to be uploaded OR enter the full path in the box above and press <Enter>Under "Local Site", highlight the files to be transferred, right-click on those files, and select Upload. When all files are transferred, click File -> Exit.
  2. How to Make a SubFolder on Your Personal Website:
From Filezilla, double-click on the WWW folder in the right column file listing.Under Local SiteUnder Remote Site, click MkDir. Enter a directory name and click OK. To change to the directory, double-click on the directory icon. Double-click on the green up-arrow next to the two periods (..) to return to the parent directory. Suppose you are teaching stat104. You may create a web site for your stat104 section by creating a "stat104" folder under your WWW folder. Suppose you named the main page for your stat104 course to be homepage.html. Then the link for your stat104 folder would be: http://www.public.iastate.edu/~NetID/stat104/homepage.html (note that NetID is your personal ISU network ID (email address).Be sure to include the ~ symbol in the web address.
  3. Alternative File Transfer Method Using Copy-and-Paste in Windows Explorer With the Open-AFS Client Software:
The Open-AFS Client software, paired with the Mount-AFS-Home software, is a more convenient way to transfer files between your course web page and your local storage drive . If it is installed on the PC, you will see a padlock on the lower right system bar- when it is enabled it is gold, when disabled, it has a read bar through it. When enabled, it automatically maps your AFS personal files to the next available drive letter on the PC and you can copy and paste from this drive letter from Windows Explorer. Most of the Snedecor public PCs have Open-AFS and Mount-AFS-Home installed as the M: drive for personal web space, so you should be able to copy and paste from your WWW drive to your local drive. You may also install this software on your personal laptops by downloading from the Advanced Section in Scout. (From Scout, use the Configure Option to obtain the advanced section).
