        TITLE:
        Experimental Design for Drug Discovery

        ABSTRACT:

Discovering new chemical entities with desirable pharmacological properties
occurs by a process of iterative and incremental refinement.  In this way it is
quite amenable to methods of statistical experimental design, but these methods
appear in disguise, at best, in a typical drug discovery project.  An overview
of this scientific problem will highlight the opportunities for experimental
design, and describe some of the methods currently in use (and disuse).
