TITLE: Geospatial Data and Survey Data Collection

ABSTRACT:

Survey data collection methods are shaped by the need to minimize
measurement error.  For example, methodologies have been developed for
constructing and testing survey questions so that data obtained from these
questions are as accurate as possible.  The increasing availability of
geospatial data has created new opportunities for data collection methods
that rely on spatial information.  However, little is known about how to
utilize and capture geospatial data so that nonsampling errors are
minimized.  This challenge is complicated by the fact that spatial data may
be used with mobile devices and that geospatial data are generally more
voluminous and complex than alphanumeric data.  Research aimed at
developing a foundation for using and collecting geospatial data in mobile
field settings will be discussed.  Research will be illustrated with
examples from federal statistical surveys, including the USDA National
Resource Inventory, a Bureau of Labor Statistics establishment survey, and
planned field activities for the 2010 Decennial Census.
