TITLE:  On the hunt for disease genes: the need for speed

ABSTRACT:

If one believes the media, it would appear that genes for diseases are being found every day. This is partially true in that many disease genes have been found for simple diseases. However, in the last decade, we have seen very little progress in the hunt for disease genes affecting genetically complex diseases. In this talk, I will discuss some of the challenges presently faced in genetic epidemiology and how Markov chain Monte Carlo methods are helping to meet these challenges.
