TITLE: Applications of Markov Models in Genome
Informatics
ABSTRACT
A prominent statistical problem in genome informatics concerns the
formulation of (DNA) sequence models that can guide evaluation of the
significance of observed sequence patterns. Because of the complexity of
the underlying chemistry and biology, this turns out to be challenging and
fraught with pitfalls. I will discuss some of the general principles
involved as well as specific applications of Markov models. In particular,
I will review some recent attempts in our group to train Markov models in the
presence of sparse data.
