TITLE: Assessment of Nondestructive Evaluation (NDE)
Probability of Detection for Inspection with a Bivariate
Response
ABSTRACT
Nondestructive evaluation
(NDE) methods are used widely in modern industry to assure the integrity of
critical system components. Examples include rotating components of jet engines
and heat-transfer tubes in nuclear power plants. There is an important need to
quantify the probability of detection (POD) for NDE applications in both
production quality control and in-service inspection for expensive components
that degrade over time. The standard method of estimating POD, known as aˆversus
a, uses a linear regression relating NDE signal response to aw or defect size.
This paper extends this standard one-dimensional POD estimation method for
bivariate responses. The extended methods allow for truncation and censoring
encountered in many NDE applications. Atypical aw misses in one of our NDE
application examples could not be directly accounted for by the the extended ˆa
versus a method. Extra modeling e orts were made to accommodate those aw misses.
Key Words: Atypical aw misses, Censoring, Nondestructive
Evaluation (NDE), Probability of Detection (POD), Truncation
