CoNNOR: A Convolutional Neural Network for Outsole Recognition

Calculating the probability of a coincidental match between evidence and prints left at a crime scene is often considered an impossible problem by footwear forensics practitioners. In this seminar, I'll explain why the problem isn't actually impossible to solve with creative data collection methods and machine learning. I'll discuss CoNNOR, the Convolutional Neural Network we fit to solve this problem, and an approach for using neural networks with (relatively) small amounts of training data. I'll then briefly discuss recent methods for visualizing the inner workings of neural networks and provide a road map for a full solution to the estimation of coincidental match probabilities for shoe prints.
