Semiparametric Regression and Nonparametric Hypothesis Tests for Functional Data

I will summarize a few recent projects on semiparametric regression models where the response variables are functional data. Examples are provided for functional data with sparse, irregularly spaced measurements (later referred to as sparse functional data) and those measured on a dense regular grid (referred to as dense functioinal data). These data are collected from either complete randomized designs or nested designs. I will demontrate some typical methodology for semiparametric regression, covarianc estimation, principal component analysis and hypothesis testing when analyzing such data. The asymptotic behavior for the estimators and test statistics are quite different between sparse and dense function data and I will discuss the phase transition phenominon in their asymptotic distributions. I will also provide a few directions for future research on this topic.
