Title: VA Electronic Medical Records for Research – Challenges and Opportunities
Abstract: Veterans Health Administration (VHA) is the largest integrated US health system, which serves more than 9 million veterans nationwide each year. It is also one of the earlies systems that adopted electronic health records (EHR). In the past 20+ years, it has collected more than 23.5 million patients in the system. Patients in this system are less likely to change health systems once they enroll; therefore, patient records are more complete than those in private health systems in the US. Accessing to EHR data in the VA system is highly regulated. I will share my experience in conducting EHR-based research using an example project on autosome polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD). I will discuss the challenges and opportunities working with the VA EHR data from an applied statistician’s point of view.
