Title: Counting Turns from GPS Coordinates
Abstract: A Naturalistic Driving Study (NDS) is a method that is used to study driver behavior in real-world situations. The process involves installing inward and outward-facing cameras, as well as a black box in the subject's vehicle to track location, speed, and heading, among other features. To understand driving behavior in specific situations, certain characteristics such as drive duration, drive distance, and the number of left/right turns must be extracted. In this talk, I will discuss an approach to counting the number of turns by using heuristic parameters to tune the counting functions. I will also talk about the challenges of counting turns using NDS data and the ongoing development of an R package to facilitate this process.
