The Department of Statistics at Iowa State University is proud to announce the recipients of this year’s Graduate Student Awards, which honor individuals who have made significant contributions to the field of statistics at our institution. These awards recognize exceptional academic achievements by our graduate students.
Vera David Fellowship
Established in honor of Vera David, a prominent figure in our department’s history, this fellowship is awarded to a female graduate student entering her second year of study. This year’s recipient is Xiansi Ma.
Holly and Beth Fryer Award
This award, honoring Holly Fryer, the first doctoral graduate in Mathematics with a major in Statistics from Iowa State, and his wife Beth, is given to students who exhibit a superior academic record upon completing their PhD core courses. Congratulations to Debarshi Chakraborty and Gautham Venkatasubramanian.
Kempthorne Award
Named after Professor Oscar Kempthorne, a distinguished expert in experimental design and statistical inference, this award is given for outstanding performance in STAT 5000 and 5100. The 2024 recipient is Rebekah Scott.
Sposito Statistical Computing Award
This award recognizes outstanding contributions in statistical computing and is named in honor of former faculty member Vincent Sposito. This year’s awards go to Yuyang Li and Joshua Berlinski (not pictured).
George W. Snedecor Award
In memory of George W. Snedecor, the founder of statistics at Iowa State University, this award is presented to a student who has excelled in the written PhD preliminary exam and statistics courses. The 2024 recipient is Laritza Dominguez Lorenzo.
