Data in Action: How Stats Seniors Made Summer Count

Internships provide invaluable opportunities for students to gain hands-on experience, bridge the gap between academic learning and professional practice, and explore potential career paths. For statistics students at Iowa State University, these summer experiences showcase the diverse ways their skills can make an impact. This summer, seniors Angelina Allen, Nathan Rethwisch, and Emily Allen applied their knowledge in innovative ways, contributing to exciting projects and organizations while preparing for their futures in the field.

Allen spent her summer developing and managing data input forms for the Yankees database. She also operated game data collection systems including KinaTrax, Trackman, and Ballcap. In her role, she worked with the senior analyst of performance science and learned player report techniques and project planning.

“I learned the ins and outs of how a professional baseball team runs on the field, in the front offices, and behind the scenes where the hard work is really put in,” Allen said.

As an intern for Collins Aerospace, Rethwisch implemented machine-learning models to create predictions of cost for purchased materials, documented and cleaned internal server data, and utilized data analysis and visualization techniques to create ad-hoc data reports for supply chain units.

“It was a great experience to apply what I had learned at Iowa State to projects at Collins and continue developing my data and analytics skills,” Rethwisch said.
