Emily Green graduated in Spring 2024 with a degree in statistics and business and data science minors. She credits her major to finding professional success.
“Majoring in statistics really helped me develop being detail oriented and my data analysis skills.”
Green chose her major because she loves math and numbers. In particular, these were her favorite courses:
- Theory of Probability and Statistics I (STAT 3441) with Danica Ommen, which was her favorite course in college.
- The most challenging course that helped her to grow was Theory of Probability and Statistics II (STAT 3442) with Farzad Sabzikar.
Now working as an underwriting analyst for the medical stop loss team at Tokio Marine HCC, Green manages insurance quote submissions and organizes and validates case data, which is given to underwriters for analysis.
Green would like people to know that she was job searching for six months after graduation until landing in her current role. She is thrilled with the company, culture, and people and encourages other job searchers to keep going.
Within her position, she had a “statistics in action” moment of realizing how credibility theory is used in real pricing decisions. Using the theory helps to analyze a broader data set and prevents price spikes for outliers.
Her next career goal is insurance underwriter, and her educational background will help, “I think having a statistical background will really help me flourish.”
