Now an alumna, she is aware that adding a double major is advantageous in her career, “It has given me a solid background in statistical theory that I can apply to my actuarial work.”

Quigley now works as an actuarial student at Axene Health Partners in Minneapolis, Minnesota. She is working towards becoming a credentialed actuary, which she studies for daily.

Other job tasks include working with an actuary on client projects. Quigley uses Incurred But Not Reported (IBNR) and Premium Equivalence (PE) models, experience reports, and prepares and creates reports and summaries of analyses.

Quigley cites statistics concepts as being helpful in being well-prepared at work and in exam preparation. Some of her favorite and most useful courses were:

  • Introduction to Statistics with Kevin Kasper established a foundation of statistics fundamentals, making advanced statistics concepts more approachable.
  • Theory of Probability and Statistics gave Quigley a strong foundation of probability, which helped her to pass the actuarial Probability exam. She also appreciated the collaborative work environment, which helped to develop statistics and problem-solving skills.

Within the statistics department, Quigley also appreciated the collaborative student community, where she made friends and connections.

Quigley was also involved in rock-climbing intramurals with friends. Her favorite memory at Iowa State is winning the bouldering and top roping rock climbing intramural competitions.
