Alumni Spotlight: Jordan Turnbull volunteers as basketball statistician

Jordan Turnbull headshotJordan Turnbull had an interest in sports and statistics before becoming a statistics major. As a freshman, he changed his major to statistics, and he transformed his major into a student organization with networking and volunteer opportunities.

Turnbull graduated with a double major in statistics and finance in spring 2017.

As an undergraduate student, he co-founded the sports analytics club, which is now a working group. The club hosted speakers from the Iowa State University Athletics department, including Jamie Pollard, Matt Campbell, and basketball and volleyball team staff.

Statistics faculty and alumni also spoke with the club. Turnbull said about hosting the Miami Dolphins’ Director of Football Analytics, “It was great to see that someone from Iowa State was living out their dream for their day job.”

In addition to co-founding the sports analytics club, Turnbull also volunteered as a statistician for the men’s basketball team. Within his role, he helped with lineup efficiencies. He appreciated the opportunity to get involved at the intersection of statistics and sports.

Some of his favorite Iowa State memories were at Hilton Coliseum, especially College Gameday versus Kansas and Naz Long’s three to force overtime against Oklahoma State.

After graduating, Turnbull began working for Modern Woodman’s Fixed Income team. His roles have various levels of Securities Analyst. He now works as a Junior Portfolio Manager.

Within his finance role, he is using the skills he learned in the statistics department to get creative to analyze risk across sectors such as real estate, tech, media, telecom, and consumer goods.
