Carter Kephart will graduate in Spring 2027 with a double major in statistics and biology. Prior to college, he had goals of working in math and/or science, and his degree combines interests.
While working toward his degree, Kephart has found skills overlap between his majors. “In biology, there's a lot of data analysis of the results. Statistics has been helpful with that.”
Some of Kephart’s favorite courses and memories have been:
- STAT 3410 (Introduction to the Theory of Probability and Statistics I) with professor Arka Ghosh helped him get comfortable with R and coding programs.
- STAT 3010 (Intermediate Statistical Concepts and Methods) with teaching professor Laura Ziegler gave him the opportunity to work in JMP with students from a variety of majors
- BIOL 3130L (Genetics Laboratory) included yeast experiments and identifying traits in their own DNA (preferences for salty or sweet, mosquito attractant or repellent, etc.)
Outside of coursework, Kephart co-founded and serves as co-president for Mezzo Forte Acapella. They recently competed in the quarterfinals of the International Competition of Collegiate Acapella with goals of semi-finals in the future.
In the future, Kephart has goals of working in biostatistics, potentially in cancer research. He is excited about the idea of contributing to a larger goal with analysis and research.
