Lilly Otter entered Iowa State University as a animal ecology major and was devastated to have zero math classes on her initial freshman year schedule.
Quelling her concerns, Otter added Calculus I to her schedule. She had an inkling she would add a second major in statistics, especially after loving Advanced Placement (AP) Statistics in high school.
Otter is now a sophomore with a double major in ecology and statistics. She has future goals of working in environmental education but also appreciates the ability to apply her majors’ knowledge in research.
Her statistics second major is described as, “Understanding how to take this information that you gathered from an experiment or survey and make something out of it.”
Otter’s future goals will begin during her summer internship as a naturalist educator at the Indian Creek Nature Center in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Related to her major, Otter serves on the planning committee for the Office of Sustainability’s Sustainapalooza event.
Otter is also involved in activities outside of her major; she also works at Recreation Services and serves on their Student Advisory Board. Otter is also the vice president of learning and development for Kappa Delta.
