Sam Fox transferred to Iowa State University during his junior year with plans to pursue a mathematics degree. After taking and enjoying a required statistics course, he added a minor in statistics.
Fox graduated with a mathematics degree and minor in statistics in Spring 2020. He decided he wanted to learn more about statistics and is now pursuing his Ph.D. in statistics.
Fox says about studying statistics, “It's hard to go wrong with statistics. If you like statistics, stick with it.”
The statistics course that sparked adding a minor was STAT 3410 (Introduction to the Theory of Probability and Statistics I) with Associate Teaching Professor Kevin Kasper. He also enjoyed STAT 3420 (Introduction to the Theory of Probability and Statistics II) with Professor Vivekananda Roy and getting comfortable using the statistical R package throughout coursework.
Fox encourages undergraduate students to begin growing their abilities to communicate about statistics early in their education.
Now a graduate student, Fox has a teaching and research assistantship, where he holds course office hours and works with Associate Professor Danica Ommen on forensic analysis research.
