Sydney McIntosh took several statistics courses while working towards her psychology degree, and she realized the value of a statistics minor.
With a long-term goal of a Ph.D. in clinical psychology, she observed about adding a statistics minor, “Statistics is a useful and helpful tool that every good researcher needs.”
While researching a statistics minor, teaching professor Laura Ziegler and associate professor Amy Froelich showed McIntosh what adding a minor could look like.
She has found that her statistics and psychology classes are connected, “It was really cool seeing how the content crossed together and applying it in my actual major.”
McIntosh will graduate in Spring 2027 with a psychology degree and minors in statistics and biology.
Her advice to other psychology majors: “Don't be scared of a stat minor because it's helpful, especially if you like research.”
McIntosh is involved in the McNair Scholars Program and serves as community chair for the Psychology Club. She also received the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (LAS) Dean’s High Impact Award for Undergraduate Research.
As a part of these opportunities, she is conducting research, which she will present at the Midwest Psychological Association Conference (with 16 other Psychology Club members). She will also present her research to the McNair Scholars Program.
