Student Spotlight: Statistics sophomore finds fit in department

Evelyn Aron headshotEvelyn Aron knew she had found her future major during an introductory statistics course at Iowa State. After one statistics course she decided to major in statistics.

Aron said about majoring in statistics, “I think I’m pretty lucky to have stumbled upon intro to statistics.” She especially appreciates the professors and that she can ask statistics faculty questions. As she thinks about the breadth of statistics classes, the knowledge across classes has been able to transfer from one to another.

When reflecting upon what could be better understood about statistics, Aron thinks the breadth and depth of the field is underestimated. When mentioning to other students her major, she sometimes has to explain that statistics is its own field and goes beyond the introductory statistics concepts.

Aron just completed her first sophomore semester as a statistics and economics double major at Iowa State. She also has minors in data science and mathematics.

Aron has put her coursework to use as a student employee at the Institute for Transportation (InTrans), primarily working in ArcGIS Pro to annotate road and pavement distresses on aerial imagery. She is particularly proud of her work at InTrans, “It's something that I had never done before. So being able to make something that detects literally anything was huge for me.”

In addition to InTrans, Aron met with the economics department chair to discuss analyzing data from ISU Dining. She has started the data request process and looks forward to the research project. Aron’s next professional experience will be an internship this spring.

Beyond coursework, Aron is in the Undergraduate Statistics Club and serves on the Student Board of Chabad ISU. After graduating in 2028, she is thinking of pursuing a master’s degree. During her free time, she enjoys reading, sketching, bird watching, and origami.
