The Undergraduate Statistics Club and Data Science Club made data collection a hands-on experience at STEAM Night, hosted by Ames School District's Edwards and Mitchell Elementary Parent and Teacher Associations. About 75 individuals worked together to build a scatterplot.
Attendees measured their arm span along a wall-mounted x-axis, then jumped from that point to mark their jump height, placing a color-coded sticky note with their initials at the spot where they landed. Each sticky note color represented a different grade level, turning the wall into a living visualization of the data.
The activity plotted jump height against arm span and grade. A trend began to emerge, showing a visual of the relationship between correlation and data patterns.
