Summary of Duties and Responsibilities:
The Department of Statistics at Iowa State University seeks a tenure-track assistant professor with foundational training in statistics and expertise in statistical machine learning and/or data science. The successful candidate will develop and sustain a high-quality and high-impact research program, successfully compete for external funding, and collaborate with world-class researchers at Iowa State in statistics and other disciplines. Further, the successful candidate will engage in professional and institutional service, teach undergraduate students, and teach and advise graduate students in one of the largest statistics’ graduate programs in the country.
Required Minimum Qualifications:
- A Ph.D. or equivalent degree in statistics or a closely related discipline.
- Foundational training in statistics with expertise in statistical machine learning and/or data science.
- Experience that demonstrates the ability to teach statistics classes at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
- Experience that demonstrates the ability to develop and sustain a high-impact research program with the potential to secure external research funding.
- Experience that demonstrates the ability to collaborate effectively with researchers in other disciplines.
The Department of Statistics at Iowa State University has a rich tradition of developing quantitative methods for researchers in a broad range of scientific and engineering disciplines. The doctoral program in Statistics is ranked as one of the top programs in the country, graduating about 15 PhD students annually. The program currently has about 140 graduate students, more than 100 undergraduate majors, and 37 faculty. Faculty and students have traditionally maintained strong collaborations across campus. The Statistics Department is located in Snedecor Hall, which received an extensive renovation in 2009. The Department of Statistics is jointly administered by the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (LAS).
The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences is one of the world’s leading institutions of agriculture, with more than 160 years of leadership in science, education and extension. The college educates future leaders, conducts mission-oriented research, and shares new knowledge for the betterment of Iowa and the world. The college has about 4600 students and about 715 dedicated faculty and staff serving 15 departments.
Liberal Arts and Sciences is the largest college at Iowa State University, with about 7,000 students, 22 departments, one professional school, and numerous cross-disciplinary programs. Its internationally renowned research programs in science, social science, and the humanities form the intellectual core of the university, while its broad curricular offerings and emphasis on student-centered learning engage every student on campus.
