Associate Professor Jarad Niemi is the Data Management Lead for Science-based Trials of Rowcrops Trials Integrated with Prairie Strips (or STRIPS for short). Prairie STRIPS have shown benefits to a number of ecosystems services including reduced sediment runoff, increased nutrient retention on agricultural fields, improved water quality and increased abundance, richness, and diversity in birds and bees. For the first time, the 2018 U.S. Farm Bill includes prairie strips under the Conservation Reserve Program allowing farmers, and others, to set aside land for conservation purposes. Recently prairie strips have been formally defined by the United State Department of Agriculture and signups for prairie strips are now open. For some great drone footage of prairie strips, see this tweet.
