AP® Statistics Mock Exam

AP® Statistics Mock Exam Volunteers

The AP® Statistics Mock Exam is a free opportunity available to students and teachers. The mock exam is collaboratively written by experienced AP® Statistics Exam Leaders and Readers (i.e., scorers).

The 2025 Mock Exam will take place on Wednesday, April 23rd and Saturday, April 26th. Students can choose to participate on either day. Teachers who want to participate in the "mini-reading" will need to attend on Saturday. Students may attend without a teacher, and a teacher may attend without students.

Students:  The mock exam takes place in the morning. Lunch is provided. In the afternoon, students will participate in an activity. They will receive a mock exam score on a 5-point scale. Past students appreciated this event:

  • “The Mock Exam definitely helped me prepare for the actual exam by giving me a chance to prepare for what the true testing environment would look and feel like, what the questions would be like, and by acting as a test for what concepts/units I needed to review and which I understood well enough already.”
  • “I had a wonderful experience. The test was very representative of the actual exam, while being easy to sign up for and take. The activities were fun and the immediate feedback gave me a great idea on what I needed to study, which was my reason for taking the test.”

Teachers:  A “mini-reading” will occur on-site on Saturday. Teachers learn how the exams are scored, are trained to score a free-response question, and work in pairs to score the questions on the mock exam. Teachers have permission to use the mock exam questions in their classes in future years. Teachers who participated had very positive experiences:

  • “The discussions of the development of the scoring rubrics with these individuals provided invaluable insight on how I can improve my student's approach to answering items on the exam. … They also like hearing from the faculty and current students about the program at ISU.”
  • “I appreciate the AP Exam and it was impressive to see all the work that the people who attended/spoke have put into the process over the years.  It was quite beneficial to discuss the material and how it is evaluated on the AP exam with so many experts in the field.  It was an excellent opportunity for me to widen my knowledge and experience outside of my everyday contacts.”

The Department of Statistics’ History with AP® Statistics

Many faculty members and students in our department have been heavily involved in the AP® Statistics community at the national level.

He was part of an AP® Statistics organizational meeting in the summer of 1996.  In 1997, he was a Table Leader at the first Reading. He was Chair of the AP® Statistics Development Committee from 2005-2010.  Ken attended all but a few of the readings between 1997 and 2022.  He was the Chief Reader from 2019-2022.

Dr. Barb Barnet graduated with her Ph.D. in Statistics and Curriculum & Instruction at ISU in 1999. She attended her first AP® Statistics Reading in 2004. She previously served as a Reader, Table Leader, and Question Leader. This summer (2023), she will be the Chief Reader.

Dr. Ann Cannon graduated with her Ph.D. in Statistics at ISU in 1994. She has attended all but one AP® Statistics Readings since 2000. Ann has been the Assistant Chief Reader since 2015. She has also been a content developer and accuracy checker for The Practice of Statistics (an AP® Statistics book by Daren Starnes and Josh Tabor).

Professor Emeritus Dr. Bob Stevenson started grading AP® Statistics exams in 1998. Since then, he has been a member and co-chair of the Test Development Committee and has presented Beyond AP® Statistics sessions at conferences.

Current faculty, Dr. Laura Ziegler and Dr. Anna Peterson, have served in various leadership positions (Question Leader and Rubric Team Member, respectively).

We are excited to become more involved in the AP® Statistics community at the local level. We want to connect with our local high school teachers and assist them as they grow in their teaching careers. Further, we want to help high school students succeed in learning statistics.
